"Montana officials have taken the extraordinary step of closing large parts of a popular river during the busy summer tourist season amid an effort to root out a parasite that has killed scores of whitefish" (NBC Nightly News).
A big concern is that the fish kill could have a long impact on the river's reputation as one of the best trout fisheries in the world, which draws visitors from all over. The closure is not helping business around the river. The parasite causes fish to contract a fatal kidney disease and die. The disease can have a mortality rate as high as 90 percent. Other places that have had similar outbreaks include Washington State, Oregon, Idaho, Canada and Europe. Reports of the Yellowstone river fish kill began more than a week ago. Wildlife officials confirmed more than 4,000 fish deaths, but they say the number is probably much higher. Most have been mountain whitefish, but reports noticed that the die off has affected some rainbow trout and Yellowstone cutthroat trout species crucial to the fishing industry. This is bad for the environment because not that this disease can hurt humans, but the fact that the river is now shut down. No boating or fishing can happen at the Yellowstone River. Also that the river has some sort of parasite is bad for all the fish in the river. This would be especially bad if the river being closed down had a long impact.

Livingston Parish, Louisiana (CNN)The flood is devastating in Louisiana. It now the worst natural disaster to happen in the United States since Hurricane Sandy four years ago. The Red Cross said. "Thousands of people in Louisiana have lost everything they own and need our help now," said Brad Kieserman, the Red Cross' vice president of disaster services operations and logistics. "This disaster is the worst to hit the United States since Superstorm Sandy, and we anticipate it will cost at least $30 million -- a number which may grow as we learn more about the scope and magnitude of the devastation." "6,900,000,000,000 gallons of rain in one week" "The calamity struck quickly and ferociously. In one part of Livingston Parish, more than 31 inches of rain fell in 15 hours.." This is one of the saddest disasters I have seen. Family's now have no shelter, food or clothes. The thought of one day having everything you need and then it be torn away from you, is no feeling I could ever imagine. We should all care about what is going on in our world. This can soon very well affect all of us. For one thing we have to think about the cost of repair and what it will take to get Louisiana back to wear they need to be. |
